Theme Day: Wood

Hello to all and welcome back if it's been a month since you were last here for the last CityDailyPhoto theme day. For this months theme of 'wood', the photo I've selected was a project grandpa, my son and I made for Cub Scouts. For those of you not familiar with Cub Scouts, each year we race a wooden car made of wood, plastic tires and a bit of imagination on the car creation. For this car, we glued on extra wood to the sides to make the car appear wider. Used a bit of wood filler on the front hood and a lot of sanding to make it smooth as can be. Several paint coats later, we had our finished product.

To see additional theme day photos around the world, stop by the portal page for a convenient thumbnail view of all participants. As the time zone changes each hour, more photos will be added.

State Pinewood Derby 2008

2008 minnesota state pinewood derby race at the mall of america An audience of over 550 gathered at the Mall of America in Bloomington to watch the 2008 Northern Star Council Pinewood Derby. The event—which is the largest Pinewood Derby in the country—was held on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 2.

Saturday’s race featured 212 of the fastest cars representing over 38,000 Tiger, Cub and Webelos Scouts that were eligible to compete this year. All of Saturday’s racers won at both the Pack and District levels. This was the 12th Council-wide Pinewood Derby, since it was first organized in 1997.

This was my son's first time making it to the State Pinewood Derby race. We finished 67th in contest. 67th out of over 38,000 cars state wide, I'm very happy with the results. It was quite the experience for my son making it that far, plus Grandpa and myself who helped out with making the derby car.

Pinewood Derby Cars

Pinewood derby cars A closeup of all of the 2008 Pinewood Derby cars entered by the Cub Scouts, Tiger Scouts and the 'open division' for family members. We entered two cars this year and both faired very well. My son's car placed second in the Cub Division, while my car, I mean the car I entered under my daughters name also placed second on the Open Division.

And The Winners Are....

Kate from St Paul Daily Photo left a comment yesterday, she posed the question, who has more fun? The mom's and dad's or the kids? She's right, I had a blast making this car with my son. My son created the design of the pinewood car. We brought the kit over to grandpa's, because let's face it, he had the correct tools for the job. Plus he helped me make three or four pinewood derby cars when I was my sons age [thank you very much]. I then painted the car and fine tuned the wheels as best as I could.

Racing day, watching the joy my son got as his car was clocking some very fast times race after race. My son/grandpa/me took home the third place trophy in the 'cub division' and we advance to the district pinewood derby race in April.

The boys in the photo were the winners, five in the 'cub division' [top row], five in the 'tiger division' [bottom row].

Pinewood Derby - Pack 287 - Cottage Grove

Sunday in Cottage Grove was the Cub Scout pinewood derby contest. If you're not familiar, or it's been a while since you've made your pinewood derby car....each car is made from a block of wood, you can make any shape you like, but it has to fit the track the cars travel down. The maximum weight of the car cannot exceed 5 ounces.

The photo shows the cars from the cub scout division. There was about 45 cars in all with three divisions. Tiger cubs [which I believe is 1st graders] cub scouts, and the third division is open to all non-scouts [mom's, dad's, siblings].
