Hello to all and welcome back if it's been a month since you were last here for the last CityDailyPhoto theme day. For this months theme of 'wood', the photo I've selected was a project grandpa, my son and I made for Cub Scouts. For those of you not familiar with Cub Scouts, each year we race a wooden car made of wood, plastic tires and a bit of imagination on the car creation. For this car, we glued on extra wood to the sides to make the car appear wider. Used a bit of wood filler on the front hood and a lot of sanding to make it smooth as can be. Several paint coats later, we had our finished product.

2009 Best Of Photo - Theme Day: Changes

Those of you looking for the Theme Day: Changes Photo, you'll have to scroll down to the second photo as I'm posting my "Best Of 2009" photo first and the "Theme Day" photo second.

Best Photo of 2009 Looking back on all of the photos I captured in 2009, this one stood out the most. It was really an experimental photo, perhaps that's why I like it the most. On this particular night, I was out taking photos of a major lightning storm. The rain hadn't started yet at the time. After 15 minutes of dry weather, the skies opened up and I retreated to the safety of my garage as the rain fell. While waiting for the rain to slow a little bit before I headed into my house, I snapped a couple of photos of the street lights shining off of my vehicles parked in the driveway. After viewing the photos of the night on my monitor, this photo turned out better than the lightning photos I captured.

Theme Day: Changes Greetings Theme Day viewers. Welcome to 2010 and my theme day of Changes. For me personally, a major change was tearing the roof off my home in 2009. With the help of several friends, we installed a wonderful new roof in about three days. It was quite a bit of work for all of us involved, but after several good rains storms, there are no leaks! Plus it did pass the city inspection. Life is good.

I'm using a contribution photo today from swc as my theme day photo selection. Seeing just the apples hanging there in the bare tree, just out of reach. Gravity will get the best of these apples, but how long will they stay up there?

Theme Day: "Contrast"

Greetings fellow CityDailyPhoto bloggers as you make your way through all of October's 'contrast' theme day. The photo I've selected with outrageous contrasting colors was taken in my flower garden over the summer. It features a macro shot of a katydid resting on my lily's. He really stood out with the bright orange background. I initially thought a leaf had blown onto the lily, but a second glance, I realized it was an insect. Ran into the house to grab my camera and hoped it would still be there for my return. Success!

Theme Day: Night

Hello all you Daily Photo viewers from around the world. I'm glad you stopped by on theme day, one of my personal favorite theme days we've had. I will be stopping by your blog later to see your 'night' photo first hand.

The photo I've selected for theme day comes from my garage as I look out between my two parked vehicles in my driveway. On this particular evening, there was a fantastic lightning show on display. I was in the process of snapping several outstanding lightning shots when the rains poured from the sky. When I say poor, I really should be saying buckets of rain were falling. I retreated to the quickest dry location I could get too, my garage. Since I was still setup for photo taking with my tripod, I decided to take a few more shots from the safety of my garage. Honestly, I was just experimenting with some techniques, but when I looked at the photos on my computer monitor, I really liked what I saw from these shots. It has become one of my most commented on photo on here and off of the blog. I had to repost it once more for today's theme day photo.

Theme Day: Empty

Today is the City Daily Photo's monthly theme day. This months theme is actually a challenging one. It was voted the photo theme was 'empty'. Creativity is a must with this theme. I've selected a photo I took last summer on a camping trip. The sun had set about 60 to 90 minutes at the time of this photo. All that was left was the empty sky and the moon's dancing light reflecting off of the waters for my camera to capture.

Theme Day: Shadow

With today being Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community, I'm taking a different approach to the theme of 'shadows'. I've decided to post a self portrait photo I took in the fall of last year as the sun was setting. It turned out quite pleasant and better than I was hoping the shot would turn out. So ummmm, hi! It's me!

Theme Day: Yellow

Now I'm posting today's photo very late in the day as there is less than two hours until the clock strikes midnight. However, the first of the month is 'Theme Day' in the 'City Daily Photo' community. I couldn't pass up the theme of the color yellow.

The photo I've selected is of one of the very popular Fresh French Fry stands that can be found at the Minnesota State Fair held in late August each year. It runs for two weeks, with the final day being the Labor Day holiday. As for the fry stand, most Minnesotan's who attend the fair will visit this stand year after year. They start with whole potato's, push them through a cutting system and in the vat of grease they go to cook for about three minutes. Once they are cooked, sprinkle on some salt and into a various sized cups for serving. Now you usually have to let them cool for a minute or two as they are VERY hot coming out of 450 degree bath of cooking oil.

Now I must pay respect to those who work the booth each year. The two week long fair runs during our hottest month of the year. The cooking fryers are very hot, combine that with the outside air temps and it makes for a very uncomfortable place to be in. They serve the french fries and make all of us paying customers happy while they are hot beyond belief.

Theme Day: Glass

Theme Day for the first day of March is simply: glass

The photo I've chosen was taken in St Louis during my recent trip there in the summer of 2008. The building in the reflection is the Historic Old Court House building that sits directly across from the Gateway Arch.

Theme Day: Paths And Passages

The first day of the month, myself and fellow daily photo bloggers select a theme ahead of time, we prepare a photo for the theme day and we all post our theme photo where we can then see how each photo blogger choose to interpret the theme. For the month of February, "Paths and Passages" was the selected theme. My photo was taken in the City of Cottage Grove at Hamlet Park along a straight stretch of a walking path. It had snowed about six to eight inches of snow overnight and into the morning, but by the late afternoon, it had warmed above the freezing temperature and the snow began to melt away.

Theme Day: Best Photo Of The Year

Monthly theme day photo and for the first day of the new year the theme is my personal favorite photo of the year. The photo I've chosen is a photo I took during the evening hours on one of the coldest days of the year in the Twin Cities. The building is the Landmark Center in Downtown St Paul. The public park I am standing in with all of the lights is called Rice Park.

Theme Day: Circles Or Spheres

The first day of each month, many of the city photo bloggers participate in a theme photo. December's theme is circles or spheres. I found wanted to incorporate Christmas into my theme day photo and found the largest Christmas ornaments I could find in the Twin Cities. These can be found hanging at the Mall Of America in Bloomington.

November 1st, Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community. This month's theme is 'Books'. How fitting of a theme, since a personal favorite book of mine has been my inspiration for the Twin Cities daily photo. The book, published in 2001, is titled 'Minneapolis-St Paul, Then And Now'. The cities Minneapolis and St Paul IS the 'Twin Cities' this blog is named after.

Theme Day: Lines

The theme day for October 2008 is 'lines'. I found today's theme day in the City Daily Photo Community to be one of my favorites of all of the theme's I've participated in. When one goes out and specifically looks for 'lines' to photograph, they can be found everywhere! I was looking through my archives and found many examples that I could have easily posted today. I opted for something a bit on the unusual side as I often like to do. If you've stopped by to read the description today, hopefully you're wondering what this is making those lines. Perhaps you have it figured out, perhaps you have an idea what it could be but aren't quite sure, perhaps it's not so clear. Perhaps I'll show you what it is tomorrow.

Theme Day: Metal

Hopefully I have a bit of a different take on the August Theme Day. This month the them is 'metal' sure, sure, Minnesota is home of the Iron Range in the northern part of the state. My take on the 'metal' theme is the 'Heavy Metal' variety. I enjoy a good, loud, head banging, fist pumping, mosh pit, thrashing guitars, pounding drums, guitar solos and a singer who doesn't sound like Britney Spears. From row 14 at the Kid Rock concert at the Xcel Energy Center on April 13, 2006. This is my 'metal' theme day photo. Oh and I may not exactly enjoy the mosh pits, I'm not as young as I once was.

Theme Day: "No . . ." signs

The first of the month and the City Daily Photo has elected for the Theme Day: No [fill in the blank] signs. You know the signs, "No Parking" "No Trespassing" something along those lines. Well, I went to great lengths for my sign. I went to the end of the road in Ely, Minnesota. Essentially, I went to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and snapped a shot of the sign in the photo. I wanted something different, something no one else would have, and something that wasn't easy to obtain. Granted, the timing was perfect as I had planned a trip to the BWCA in June and I knew ahead of time July's theme day. See some of my favorite BWCA photos I've taken.

Theme Day: My Favorite Corner Store

June's theme day in the City Daily Photo community was a bit different for me. My favorite local corner store is the theme, but I found myself in search of a favorite. There was a couple I visited growing up as a child, but nothing really stood out to me as a favorite. Or the ones I do remember are no longer a corner store or have been torn down. This posed a challenge. I was passing through the East Side neighborhood last month when this place caught my eye. I made several visits here when I was over at my cousin's house, which is on the same block as this corner store. The very aged sign says the name of the store is called 'Blue' for some reason that name doesn't ring a bell. It may have been called something else when I was much younger, or my cousin called it something else. I just can't recall right now.

First of the month is Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community. This theme is a bit different, the challenge is to take photo of 'numbers' in your city.
