I bet you're curious how I got this grasshopper photo? There was a bit of luck involved to the grasshopper like this. I was leaving for work on a very hot a steamy afternoon. I opened the car door and was hit in the face by a wall of sweltering heat from the car sitting in the sun all afternoon. It was very hot outside and even hotter inside my vehicle. I must get inside the car so I can leave, I turn on the engine and fire up the air conditioner. I'm sitting there for a few minutes in the drivers seat, when this grasshopper jumps onto the front window of my car. What luck eh?
This big green caterpillar will morph into a big brown moth. The bright green is surprising, not to mention the size of the big green bug. With camera in hand, swc was able to capture this contribution photo. I've found a site that shows what this caterpillar will turn into for those interested in more of the story.
These insects look rather nasty to me. They are called an earwig and looks like something out of a Hollywood creep show movie. Earwigs are generally nocturnal while hiding in dark moist areas in the day. To me, they're simply creepy!
I posted a photo last week on June 21,2010 showing a mystery insect. After a bit of investigating, I can confidently say that I've identified the bug in question. It is a young cadydid. If you follow this blog, last summer on August 10, 2009, I posted a contrasting photo of an adult cadydid resting on a lily. Today I am showing both the adult and youth, from similar side profiles, so you can compare and see what the younger version will grow into.
I cannot identify this insect, however, he gives off a tone, that this flower is his and he is not to be disturbed.
Greetings fellow CityDailyPhoto bloggers as you make your way through all of October's 'contrast' theme day. The photo I've selected with outrageous contrasting colors was taken in my flower garden over the summer. It features a macro shot of a katydid resting on my lily's. He really stood out with the bright orange background. I initially thought a leaf had blown onto the lily, but a second glance, I realized it was an insect. Ran into the house to grab my camera and hoped it would still be there for my return. Success!

This contribution photo from swc of a Hawk Moth taken in his flower garden in New Brighton. The wings of this moth are clear, it sips nectar from flowers and the wings beet extremely fast. Not surprisingly, it's also been called a hummingbird moth. Now to me, it looks similar to a crawdad, but with wings. Getting a clear photo was a bit difficult with the moth buzzing around as fast as it was.
While walking through the butterflies area at Como Park in St Paul, I captured this second photo of the butterfly with a broken wing, the original photo is here. It was photographed in a different area of the room, but until I looked closely at my batch of photos from the day, I never realized it was the same butterfly I was looking at.
Back to the Butterfly area in Como Park in St Paul. Yes, butterflies do eat more than nectar.
It looks like a soft landing spot to me. I captured this broken winged butterfly at Como Park in St Paul this past summer. The park has a new butterfly building to the grounds. I'm not sure if this is a permanent feature to the park or if it was only for this year. One can literally walk among 60 to 70 butterflies in the netted area. You are warned to watch your step as the winged creatures will rest on the walking path.
Every year. during the fall, the bees find a way into my three season porch. It's fully screened, with a roof and there also is screen under the floor. The entire summer months, we never get any misquotes, bees, ladybugs, you name it, they don't come onto the porch. Yet, during the fall, the bees and ladybugs manage to find their way in. They always collect on the sunny side of the porch which would be south. I captured this little guy as he was looking for a way out in this corner.
My son spotted this creepy crawler one morning on his way to school just sitting there waiting for the next meal. It was the size of an average grape. I have not looked to see what type of spider it is, but I'm glad it was outside of my home and not on the inside.
