Who Knew We Had This Before New York?

Move over New York, it appears that St Paul has the Original Coney Island Cafe. They've been there since 1923! 444 St Peter Street is the location in downtown St Paul. I love the address next door, it reads 444 1/2. I'd be curious how many people from St Paul knew that they have the Original Coney Island Cafe in their own back yard? Oh the money that will be saved from not having to travel to New York.

FOLLOW UP 10.09.2015: It appears they open for special occasions. A very interesting read on the historic business: http://www.twincities.com/ci_20176477/st-pauls-coney-island-cafe-puts-dog-st

That's interesting. Nice shot too. Looks a place that should be full of characters.

How interesting!?!? I wonder if the original owner was from Coney Island or the store started out in Coney Island and then moved to the Twin Cities.

How was the food there? Did you get a corndog and some pretzels?

I'd really like to know the story. I've done a google search and found nothing on the history of this place. The day I took the photo was the first time I've ever noticed this store, so I have yet to see what the food is like.

slinger, it's not open. it hasn't been open in years.
the pioneer press has written about it several times--the owners closed it about 10 years ago when their mother got sick.

they keep saying they'll reopen but they haven't. every so often they announce they're going to reopen, but they don't.

it's a strange little mystery.

you could search the PP's archives online and find some of the stories.
